Using Bollards to Protect Your Buildings and Equipment

Bollards, like these shown in yellow, protect gate openers, buildings and sensitive equipment.

If you have a business that has a lot of vehicular traffic, you are well accustomed to the risks that come with having cars close to buildings and sensitive equipment. In some cases, you may even need to prevent or limit the access of cars and trucks to your facility. If this is the case, you may need to consider installing bollards.

What are Bollards?

Bollards are traffic control devices that can stop or limit the access of vehicles into or out of your facility. They could range from simple posts to large decorative structures that are placed outside of buildings. Secure Access Services has installed bollards that are fixed in place and bollards that pop-up or retract as needed to control traffic. But is a bollard right for your facility?

Do You Need Bollards for Your Property?

Bollards are very affordable and could be the right fit for your property. Here are three things you’ll want to keep in mind as you determine whether or not they are right for you.

  1. Bollards protect your equipment and facilities. Bollards are used to stop or control the flow of traffic. As a result, they are great at protecting equipment and facilities. Banks use them to protect the pneumatic tubes in the drive thru lanes. Self-storage facilities place them near the corners of buildings to keep drivers from hitting the building with their vehicles. A bollard is a great way to stop a vehicle from doing damage to buildings.
  2. Bollards provide building security. Military bases, government buildings, nuclear power plants and other important facilities need to limit or control cars and trucks coming onto their property. Secure Access Services has completed several installations of bollards on military bases that can pop-up as needed to stop fast-moving vehicles from crashing gates or running into buildings before they could cause harm.
  3. Bollards can be very stylish and attractive. Today’s bollards go well beyond the standard post or concrete barrier. Bollards can be very stylish to fit the architectural flair of the buildings they are meant to protect. Perhaps you’ve seen the large red ball-shaped concrete structures outside of Target or big concrete planters filled with plants at the entrance to a building. These devices are bollards and are designed to be very functional while at the same time providing an aesthetic appeal. The bottom line: bollards do not have to be boring or ugly.
